The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has agreed to become an Honorary Vice President of the Dylan Thomas Society as it heads towards the centenary of the writers birth in 2014. The invitation was accepted during an meeting between Archbishop Rowan and the vice chairman of the Society Geoff Haden in which they recorded an interview on Dylan Thomas to feature in an archive at the poets birthplace at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in Swansea. The interview, which took place at Lambeth Palace, covered the influence that Dylan Thomas had on Archbishop Rowan who, like Dylan, was born and brought up in Swansea and is a published poet observed I think all of us who were interested in literature at school in Swansea of that generation fancied ourselves as the Dylan Thomas of the next generation and were very much influenced by the superficial style and tried to copy it. Geoff Haden found that Like Dylan Rowan Williams has a deep affinity with Swansea as it is a place that draws one back. The interview was part of a project, 100 Voices, to produce one hundred interviews of people who met or were influenced by Dylan over the past one hundred years. The project is well on its way and meeting people of all walks of life has been fascinating and range from the maid who worked for the Thomas family when Dylan was a teenager to President Jimmy Carter who has been a lifelong fan. Said Society chairman Jeff Towns We already have Dylans granddaughter Hannah Ellis as our active President and I am delighted that the Archbishop has accepted our invitation as we approach 2014. The Archbishop saw the centenary as an important milestone and said The best way of celebrating is to encourage young writers and I hope that whatever is done for the centenary thee will be a lasting memorial that will help young people writing poetry and prose perhaps by spending some time with a senior writer or poet. The edited interview will be showing for house tour visitors at the Dylan Thomas Birthplace at the start of 2013. The membership is from all over the world including Australia, Japan and USA. It was one of the leading champions of a memorial stone to the poet in Westminster Abbeys Poets Corner and holds a memorial service each year around the time of his birth on 27 th October 1914 at Westminster Abbey. The society holds regular meetings and membership entitles free entry to the Dylan Thomas Birthplace house tours http://www.thedylanthomassocietyofgb.co.uk

Aeronwy Thomas-Ellis the daughter of Dylan Thomas passed away suddenly on Monday after suffering from cancer for some time.Aeronwy worked tirelessly on behalf of her father's memory and was responsible for keeping his memory alive particularly in the 70s and 80s. Her brother Llewellyn died in 2000 and a younger brother Colm lives in Italy. She has two children Huw and Hannah. We first met Aeronwy and her husband Trefor at the London Welsh Club in London a few months after we had taken on the restoration of 5 Cwmdonkin Drive which was the birthplace of Dylan. She agreed to help us in any way and to be our house inspector when the work was finished.Over the next three years she visited on a number of occasions and officially opened the house to the public on what would have been her father's 94th birthday last 27 October. In unveiling a new plaque on the wall of the house to 'A man of words' she said that she was overwhelmed by the press and media interest in her family (pictured with us at the unveiling).Last year she followed in her father's footsteps and toured the States with Swansea poet Peter Thabit Jones and opened the Dylan Thomas trail in New York.Aeronwy was a small lady with a dry sense of humour who inherited her father's looks and poetic ability - we will miss her support and friendship. Her funeral will be at 1.30pm on Thursday 6th August at Holy Cross Church, Motspur Park, Surrey

Dylan Down The Ups is the title of a brand new series of events to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the birth of Dylan Thomas in his home village of Uplands in Swansea on 27th October 2009.A year ago we - Anne and Geoff Haden - celebrated the opening of the fully restored birthplace of Dylan Thomas at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive with an Edwardian afternoon tea for a hundred people on what would have been the 94th birthday of the most well known man of words of the 20th century. The house lies at the northern boundary of Uplands up a steep hill - Dylan made the journey down many times and people in Swansea refer to the area - and the Uplands Tavern (formerly Uplands Hotel) - as 'the Ups'From that successful event we have moved to team up with residents and traders of the village of Uplands to celebrate his 95th birthday with a series of events planned throughout the day to give the area a party atmosphere despite it being in October.Says Anne Haden Swansea is made up of villages and this is Dylans after all it was the place where he lived for over half his life and so much of his work was inspired by the area this is the least that we can do for him.Dylans short stories are typically Welsh and full of humour while his poems are deep. The aim is to bring Dylan back to street level through fun, friendliness and accessibility. The area still has its Victorian and Edwardian character and what we are aiming to do is make the village the centrepiece of the celebrations with events going on in the street and many of the shops, cafes and the pub.People will be able to follow in Dylans footsteps and learn about the shops that were in the Uplands in his day when it was a more select shopping area with its own identityWe want to involve all the community and there will be events for children and adults and because it will be during the October half term should attract a lot of interest from out side Wales.Geoff Haden says that the plans are in an early stage but confirmed that There will be a Dylan Look Alike Competition, short story and art competitions and shops will be encouraged to compete in the best dressed window award. We are in advanced discussions to premiere in Wales a new play about Dylan Poem in October by the writer Robert Forrest written especially for the leading Scottish actor Finlay Welsh and we would love to see people from all over the world. The plans have received enthusiastic support from local traders and we hope that this will develop into a week long event by the time that we celebrate the Centenary of Dylans birth in 2014.Nigel Clatworthy from The Chattery has already given his support to the birthday plans and says Anne has booked our venue for the poet Peter Thabit Jones and musician Terry Clarke for an evening of Dylans work and some new and original material from both performers its something that we are really looking forward to.Want to get involved?
Nam Le, who won the 60,000 Dylan Thomas Prize for his book The Boat last November took on the challenge of meeting 11 year old schoolchildren from Terrace Road School as part of his role as an ambassador for the University of Wales sponsored Prize. The meeting with the 36 Year 6 pupils took place at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive , Uplands, Swansea - the birthplace of Dylan Thomas which has been restored to its condition as a new house in 1914 by local couple Anne and Geoff Haden and where the prizewinning author stayed for a few days.Said Nam "The children amazed me with their range of original ideas - they kept me on my toes all day."Staying at the birthplace of Dylan Thomas has been a huge treat - I've learned something about how this house and the area influenced his early work."Apart from the workshops with Nam the children also toured the house with Anne and were shown by tour guide Ann Hughes how to make a cup opf tea using leaf tea, a teapot and china cups with not a teabag in sight!.Geoff took them on a trip to nearby Cwmdonkin Park where they followed the love triangle short story Patricia, Edith and Arnold in which Patricia, the maid at Number 5 and Edith who worked next door discover that they are dating the same man. Sparks fly when the three meet up at the bowls pavillion in the park under the watchful eye of the youthful storyteller Dylan! In the evening Nam and 2006 prizewinner Rachel Tresize talked about their writing careers in conversation with Peter Stead and award winning author Flur Dafydd at the Dylan thomas Centre.

American undergraduate students from the School of Natural Sciences at Colgate University in Hamilton NY swopped science studies for Celtic studies and voted the visit to Dylan Thomass birthplace at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, Uplands, Swansea as one of the highspots of their visit to Wales over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. The university is 100 miles from New York and takes its name from the founder of the Colgate soap dynasty and students take a year out of their science studies to follow a course in literature and the arts.Course lecturer Ken Belanger who devised the programme said The ethos of the university is to give students the opportunity to graduate with a rounded education which suits them better for the ever flexible modern working environment. At Cwmdonkin Drive we were able to combine superb hosts with a beautiful house to give the students an outstanding experience of the influences on Dylan's work.T James Jones of Cardiff University has been responsible for organising the visit said Historically we have only looked at the house which was so much a part of Dylan and his work from outside but this year we had a wonderful tour which has really brought Dylan alive.Although we look broadly at Celtic literature Dylan and his work is very popular with the students and visiting the house is a privilege and a real bonus. The students entered into the spirit of the Edwardian house experience by helping to prepare afternoon tea made from loose tea served from a teapot into china cups accompanied by home made Welsh cakes. The Bank Holiday Celtic trail continued with a visit to the Thomas family home at Fernhill near Carmarthen before travelling to an overnight stay in St Davids. The holiday weekend produced a steady stream of visitors for the pre booked guided tours of Dylans birthplace which last about two hours and Anne Haden said We have been delighted with the response and the Bank Holiday sunshine brought out so many people that we ran out of Welsh cakes at one stage.
