John Good is well known throughout the West, South, Midwest and in his native Wales as a multi-instrumentalist, Welsh piper, singer/songwriter, storyteller, composer and poet. A veteran of many Celtic festivals and concerts, including Estes Park, Chicago Celtic Fest, Sea Shanty Festival San Diego and Highland Games Denver, he brings the subtly different flavor of traditional Welsh music to the contemporary stage.
John was born in 1949 in Cwmafan, South Wales, UK., into a house where the Welsh Language was spoken. Educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where he studied with renowned Welsh composer Alan Hodinott. Taught in the London School system for several years. Immigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles then moving to Phoenix in 1989.
His goal is to strengthen a fledgling, Welsh and Celtic cultural presence in the Southwest and North America, by creating regional focal points, where American and Welsh/Celtic-born people with an interest in their heritage, culture and language would come to reconnect with their own living history.
Firstly, finely slice the contents of a tin of corned beef (Fray Bentos if available). Leave on the window sill for 10 minutes to breathe the incomparable Steel Works air.

Do the same with a tin of spam. (Don't worry if you have the lager/cider shakes and you drop it on the floor ... it'll taste the same and no-bugger saw 'ew anyroad).

Go to Tesco's and buy a pound of black pudding. (Try and get the seriously marbled variety). Drizzle with Dandelion and Burdock fortified pop. Keep in a dry place away from family pets.

While at Tesco's ask Dai the butcher for some fresh lard, and while 'ewarthere, get 'im to throw in a pound of tripe. Don't forget to tell 'im ew dont want to see any fur on any of his meat, not like last week. (Jest jokin!)

Put everything in the blender and don't forget to hold the top on ... this mixture is bloody dynamite! Adding a pint of pre-made, store-bought Bloody Mary cocktail (or Popov - fortified chicken stock), forget the stick of celery, add any demonic curry sauce left in the fridge, or in the living room last night, (inspect for family pet paw marks), then puree until mottled pink or the blender starts smoking.

Pick out unwanted gristle, add a sprig of nettles and taste.

Decide you're not at all hungry, throw everything in the bin, (including the blender), put on your coat - because it is probably raining - and go back to the scene of last night's crime and drink your hangover into submission. Bon Appetite!

Beams of Light Please click on the above link to hear 'Beams of Light' . A Short Interview With John Good AmeriCymru: 'Bridges' ( from which 'Beams of Light' is taken ) is a work in progress. When can we expect to hear more? Will there be a CD? John: I'm hoping to add another installment before Nadolig/Christmas. but I'm trying to keep the energy up without rushing. I'm looking at adding "moving" graphics for a YouTube kind of job, possibly ending up as a multimedia CD. AmeriCymru: I know many of our members will be keen to hear this work performed at the WCE. Will it be in your repertoire? John: Some parts but other similar and dissimilar things (got to keep you and me on our toes). Anyway, Welsh culture of the more traditional kind is extremely broad-based and routinely neglected. I try to adjust that wherever I go. Everything is on the table. AmeriCymru: How would you describe Beams of Light/Bridges? Is it perhaps a song cycle or a series of connected poems set to music? Does it have an overall theme? John: I think it's a first installment of a 20 year scrapbook of song, verse, instrumental with story and legend to be added in future linked episodes ... sort of an alphabet 'cawl' with musical croutons. The theme is a loose narrative created by longtime travelling, learning, laughing, forgetting, regretting and loving. AmeriCymru: Is it possible to detect many influences at work in 'Beams of Light'. Has the writing been influenced by any one particular poet/songwriter would you say? John: Many: Viv Stanshall, both Dylans, rock salmon and 6, Gareth Edwards, Strongbow, Owain Glyndwr, choc ices, Port Talbot steel works ... AmeriCymru: Any final message for our readers? John: Y mae Cymru ar fin o adennill ei hunan hyder. Byddwch yn falch. Wales is on the point of regaining her self confidence. Be proud. .

Welsh/English text. Yn ystod y ddau benwythnos diweddaf, oedd 'da fi'r bleser hudol o ymweld a rhyngweithio a dau gymuned hen braidd eto bywiol AmeriGymreig: Beaver Creek OR a Malad ID. Over the past two weekends I've had the fascinating pleasure of visiting and interacting with two quite old yet active AmeriWelsh communities: Beaver Creek. OR and Malad ID. Mewn llawer o ffyrdd maen nhw yn debyg iawn eto oedd yn brofiadau pur wahanol. In many ways they are very similar and yet were quite distinct experiences. Gaf i gyfrif y ffyrdd: Let me count the ways: Cartref Eglwys Bryn Seion yw BC. Es i'r ardal gyda fy ngwrp werin Gymreig Tramor i chwarae mewn cyngerdd ac arwain y Gymanfa Ganu.) BC is the home of Bryn Seion nondenominational church. (I went to the area with my Welsh Folk band Tramor to do a concert and lead the Cymanfa Ganu.)
Bryn Seion Cymuned LDS yw Malad. Es i fan 'na gyda'r chwedleuwyr Mythic Crew i recordio a pherfformio chwedlau hen a newydd, Cymru/Malad yn ystod yr yl Gymreig.. Malad is an LDS community. (I went there with the storytelling Mythic Crew to record and perform Welsh/Malad tales old and new at the Welsh Festival.) Malad city Cafodd y ddwy 'i setlo gan ffermwyr Cymraeg eu hiaith yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg canol i hwyr ar l teithiau hynod o arwrol o Gymru.
They were both settled by Welsh speaking farmers in the mid to late 19th century after incredibly heroic journeys from Wales. Dyna bobl o dras Gymreig yn y ddwy ardal yn gweithio, mynychu'i heglwysii hun ac yn cynnal elfennau diwylliannol Cymreig ac yn dipyn bach o'r iaith ble mae cerddoriaeth a barddoniaeth yn chwarae yn rhan bwysig, grefyddol a/neu ddaearol. There are still Welsh descendants in both areas working, attending their respective churches and upholding Welsh cultural elements and some language in which music and poetry play a significant roll, either religiously and/or temporally. Yn falch iawn ydy'r ddwy o'r eu tarddiadau.
They are both proud of their origins.
Mae'r ddwy wedi teimlo fel teulu i fi.
They both felt like family to me. Dydyn nhw ddim yn unigryw ond yn dod yn adar prin.
They're not unique but are becoming rare birds. Dylai'i gwyliau ar eich rhestr pen teithiau.
Their festivals should be on your list of destinations. Pan oeddwn i ym Mhryn Seion yn arwain y gymanfa ganu, daeth Gabby i lawr i fy nghyfweld fi While I was at Bryn Seion conducting the Cymanfa Ganu, Gabby came down to interview me:
&lt;br/&gt; Teimlwch yn rhydd i gysylltu a fi. Dyna lawer mwy am ei ddweud. Feel free to contact me. There's lots more to tell.
