To quote The New York Times’ Stephen Holden, “This demure Welsh singer has one of the most striking voices in all of cabaret...” The vivacious and elegant chanteuse, who always performs with a mischievous twinkle in her eye - ...” – says, “The Metropolitan Room’s coziness suits me down to the ground. It’ll let me keep the audience where I like them – up close – in a hug – or ‘cwtch’ as we say in Welsh.” Iris Williams sings “Dreams”
Ms. Williams’ rich, warm contralto impelled her far beyond the borders of her beloved homeland, Wales. A scholarship student at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, her classical training helped Iris to thrive when her honest and touching rendition of the pop classic “He Was Beautiful” went gold and then platinum, launching the already-accomplished singing actress on an international career.
Kate Burton to open Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s
Inaugural Actors’ Showcase at the Signature Theater
in New York on September 26, 2016

New York, New York – September 20, 2016 - With the increasing numbers of UK-trained actors on the major US media channels, the time is right for The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama’s (RWCMD) inaugural US Actors Showcase in New York City. It will be held at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theater in the Signature Theater complex on September 26, 2016. Obviously, the US broadcast and theater industries value training and technique and this event will provide its American and Canadian graduates with the opportunity to showcase the talents they’ve honed at RWCMD to US casting directors, agents and managers.
The Showcase will be introduced by Emmy and Tony Award nominee Kate Burton, daughter of the great Welsh actor Richard Burton.
"I have been associated with the College for a long time and have been very impressed by the quality of work I have seen, so much so that I offered to introduce them to the New York entertainment community,” says Kate Burton.
RWCMD was named by The Guardian University Guide as the top drama school in the UK twice in the last three years; the acting course delivers an intensive program that concentrates on the skills most valued by the theater and film industries in the UK and US.
RWCMD attracts talented acting students from all over the US, following rigorous auditions in New York, Chicago and LA. With just 22 undergraduate slots, the College is one of the most competitive drama schools in the UK. Its resident company of final year actors, The Richard Burton Company, stages fifteen productions each year, running the gamut from the classic to contemporary repertoire.
Leading agents and casting directors regularly attend the College’s productions and the Head of Casting from the Royal Shakespeare Company auditions every acting student. National Theatre’s (NT) Head of Casting, Wendy Spon, is also a frequent visitor, “it’s one of my favorite drama schools,” she says. “The standard of training is high and the NT consistently auditions and employs their graduates.”
The College is one of the UK’s leading schools “with a reputation for producing unusual and exciting well-trained actors that the industry is hungry for every year,” says Tony Award-winning theatre director Michael Grandage.
Christopher Farrar of the Hamilton Hodell Entertainment Agency says, “The Royal Welsh College is an outstanding school; their ability to produce fearless, curious and exciting actors is second to none and their showcases are consistently fresh and inventive... Hamilton Hodell is extremely proud to represent many of their alumni…”

Editors’ Notes:
“We feel confident that our students will compare favourably with those training at the top US schools. So we are now putting on our first ever US Showcase at the Signature Theatre in New York. Our London Showcase is one of the best attended in the UK and we hope that that we can go from strength to strength and emulate that. It’s an adventure and we intend to enjoy it! “ David Bond, Head of Actor Training, RWCMD

In 2011 Kate Burton opened the Royal Welsh College’s new multi-million dollar facilities in Cardiff, where she also unveiled a bust of her father. Elizabeth Taylor had presented the bust of her late husband to RWCMD Patron Prince Charles at a royal gala at Buckingham Palace. It now stands in front of the new RWCMD Richard Burton Theatre. Kate Burton is an International Associate of RWCMD and continues to assist the College with its advancement appeals in the US. She is a graduate and trustee of Brown University and a graduate and on the board of advisors of The Yale School of Drama.

In 2013 on March1 (St David’s Day – the Feast of Wales’ patron saint), Welsh actor Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex), who is a Fellow and International Chair in Drama at the College, unveiled Richard Burton’s star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. With the College’s President, Lord Rowe-Beddoe, Michael then launched the College’s Scholarship Appeal in the US at a reception to celebrate Welsh talent.
2014 NATO Summit to be held in Wales, September 4-5th
Wales looks forward to welcoming the world

New York, NY July 16, 2014 -- Croeso! Or Welcome in Welsh. On September 4 th and 5 th , 2014 Wales will welcome leaders from across the globe to the 2014 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit. Not only will this be the first NATO Summit in Wales, it will be the first time a sitting US President will visit this Celtic country. The Summit will take place at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, located just twenty minutes outside the Welsh capital city of Cardiff.

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones said, “The NATO summit will bring Wales unprecedented levels of international attention and an opportunity like no other to advertise the benefits of our modern and dynamic country to the world. We pride ourselves in our great business investment potential and are already home to many international companies.
The summit will be the largest political gathering ever to be held in Britain. This is a fantastic showcase opportunity for Wales and we intend to maximise this to the full.”

Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron said, “It’s a great moment for Wales to advertise its modern and economically brilliant face to the world.” He added, “We had the G8 in Northern Ireland, we had the Olympics in London, we’ve got the Commonwealth Games in Scotland - it is Wales’ turn for one of these big events, a great showcase for Wales and a great opportunity and I’m really pleased that we are going to be doing that.”

Situated in South East Wales, the summit is positioned at the crossroads of Cardiff, Newport, and a number of historic market towns in the region including, Abergavenny, Brecon and Hay-on-Wye. Delegates attending the summit will stay in and around the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport – home to the 2010 Ryder Cup. Host hotels include: Best Western Plus Maldron Hotel Cardiff, Novotel Cardiff Centre, Mercure Cardiff Centre, Park Inn By Radisson Cardiff City Centre, Hampton By Hilton Newport East, and Holiday Inn Newport. With about 60 world leaders and up to 1,500 media delegates due to arrive, Wales hopes increased media attention will inspire travelers to come and experience its warm Welsh welcome, award-winning countryside, budding culinary scene and distinctive Celtic history.

The 2014 NATO Wales logo includes four icons of the country’s history and culture: a castle, the Welsh dragon, a Celtic knot, and the Newport Transporter Bridge. According to Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO’s Secretary General, the logo features, “strong symbols of Wales in a modern way – drawing on the past; looking to the future.” Icons of the logo include:

The Castle : Wales is home to 641 castles with more castles per square mile than any other country in the world. Four of these fortresses – Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech – make up King Edward’s Iron Ring of Castles, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Wales.

The Welsh Dragon: An image of a red dragon adorns the Welsh flag. The dragon does more than act as the face of the nation, it depicts the country’s mystical past from the legends of King Arthur to the tales of the Mabinogion.

A Celtic knot: Celtic heritage runs deep through the heart of the Welsh people. Listen as they speak Welsh -- the unfamiliar dialect is the oldest living Celtic language in the world.

The Newport Transporter Bridge: One of only six transporter bridges left in the world, the Newport Transporter Bridge dominates the city’s skyline. The bridge represents Wales success in industry, from coal in the 1900’s to aerospace and alternative energy today.

A country with a 30,000-year-old history, Wales has proven itself as a leader in industry and achievement across generations. In the 1900’s Welsh coal powered the industrial revolution and the world's first million pound check was written in Cardiff bay. In 1927, the National Museum Cardiff opened and now houses the world’s second largest impressionist art collection; and in 2012 Wales became the first country in the world with a completely walkable perimeter.

Now, three million Welsh citizens drive a robust, growing economy with strengths in defense and aerospace, manufacturing, clean energy, tourism and media production. A vibrant Welsh economy attracts organizations from around the globe who choose to base their UK operations in Wales. With government-backed financial incentives, low commercial rents, and a talented and educated workforce, Wales provides a dynamic environment for precision engineering, cutting-edge technology and more.

Press Release A Celebration of Welsh Music in NYC Welsh choral composer Paul Mealor, Wales premier mixed voice choir Crdydd, and leading Welsh harpist Gwenllian Llyr, will join forces in March to present a magical evening of Welsh choral music at one of New Yorks best concert venues. Described in the New York Times as one of the most important composers to have emerged in Welsh choral music since William Mathias , Paul Mealor was catapulted to international attention in 2011 when his motet Ubi Caritas was performed at the Royal Wedding Ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton, now HRH The Duchess of Cambridge. He is also the first classical composer to hold both the UK classical and pop chart No 1's at the same time in December 2011 with Wherever You Are , a piece written for the British Military Wives Choir, and his music has rapidly entered the repertoire of choirs and singers around the world. Mealor will conduct performances of many of his main works including Ubi Caritas and Wherever You Are at a one off concert in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Saturday March 29th . The evening will also feature the US premiere of A Welsh Prayer , a new work for choir and harp. First Performance in America C rdydd have enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years winning the Choir of the Festival Prize at the National Eisteddfod two years in a row in 2012 and 2013, and this opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall is a new high for the choir. The concert will be the choirs first performance in America, however it is not their first American connection. They welcomed Eric Whitacre, one of the most popular composers of our time, to Wales in 2010 and again in 2011 to conduct special concerts of his works. And in 2013 they toured Welsh cathedrals with both National Medal of Arts recipient, composer Morten Lauridsen and Paul Mealor. Lauridsen, Whitacre and Mealor have all praised Crdydd for their special sound and musicality. To my mind this is the best choir in Wales, says Mealor, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with them again - and to do so in such a prestigious venue. Internationally Recognized Welsh Harpist The choir and composer will be joined at the concert by Welsh harpist Gwenllian Llyr , who is quickly gaining international recognition for her energetic and charismatic performances. Gwenllian has strong connections with New York City having recently graduated with a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School where she was awarded the William Schuman prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music. And she is currently working at the Royal Academy of Music, London. She said: I cant wait to come back to New York a city that is very close to my heart and to collaborate with Paul Mealor and C rdydd. There is a long tradition of singing with the harp in Wales, and this concert will be an opportunity to showcase this tradition and for me to perform some Welsh compositions for the harp. Showcasing the best of Wales In addition to performing works by Paul Mealor, Gwenllian and Crdydd will perform works by other leading Welsh composers including Karl Jenkins and William Mathias, together with arrangements of some of the best loved songs and hymns of Wales. Concert organiser, Llyr Roberts, said: The evening will be a real celebration of Welsh choral and harp music, and will be an opportunity to showcase best of Wales in New York. The Choir will also be performing at a Cymanfa Ganu, a Welsh hymn singing event organised by the Welsh Congregation of New York on Sunday March 30. So it promises to be a great weekend!
Contact: Rebecca Chin 202-223-9260 wales@allisonpr.com FIRST MINISTER CARWYN JONES ARRIVES IN UNITED STATES FOR OFFICIAL VISIT Various Events Planned throughout Washington, D.C. and New York in Celebration of Welsh American Relations WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 25, 2014) First Minister Carwyn Jones today arrived in the United States for an official five-day visit. Between February 25 and March 1, the First Minister will host meetings with U.S. business professionals and attend celebratory events in Washington, D.C. and New York to continue strengthening the existing cultural and economic relationship between Wales and the U.S. The First Ministers visit will kick-off with a reception on Capitol Hill to support the launch of the Congressional Friends of Wales Caucus, chaired by U.S. Congressman H. Morgan Griffith (R-VA.) As part of his visit, the First Minister will pay tribute to the U.S. by participating in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, February 26. He will also attend a St. Davids Day celebration at the British Ambassadors Residence, an annual festivity hosted in honor of the patron saint of Wales. The First Minister will then travel to New York on February 27 to tour the city by visiting the SoHo House, holding a meeting at the New York Stock Exchange and hosting an excursion alongside members of the British Council to promote the launch of a new mobile application developed for the established Dylan Thomas Walking Tour of Greenwich Village. He will later host a second St. Davids Day reception at the Consul Generals Residence, which will also double as a celebration of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Thomas is honored annually by citizens of Wales for his eclectic and vibrant poetry, and this year marks the centennial anniversary of the renowned artists birthday. Distinguished harpist Claire Jones, who formerly served as Royal Harpist to His Royal Highness the Princes of Wales, will perform at the reception to showcase her new harp piece Dylan, a musical work created to honor and depict the journey of Thomas life. It is an honor to once again have the opportunity to visit the United States to demonstrate Wales enduring commitment to strengthening our cross-national relationship, said the First Minister. Through my meetings with business professionals and members of Congress, I hope that we can all unite in celebration of our already fruitful friendship and continue exploring new ways to improve upon international trade, tourism and culture. Ties between the U.S. and Wales date back to the early 17 th century and remain strong today, with both countries sharing deep-rooted values, cultural exchanges and a vibrant trade in goods, services and knowledge. This transnational support can particularly be seen in sectors such as: Environment : Wales has steadfastly worked to maintain a green global footprint through investments in a number of low carbon projects. The Welsh Government is currently supporting U.S. automaker Ford in developing its fuel-efficient EcoBoost engine at its state-of-the-art plant in Bridgend, Wales. A number of U.S. companies such as Sharp, Centrica, EDF and Magnox, among others, also currently take advantage of the abundant natural and intellectual resources available with offices in the nation. Defense : The U.S. and Wales share an understanding of the importance of a strong defense sector not only for improved global security but also for business and employment opportunities, with tens of thousands of individuals employed in the space. Wales also holds the honor of hosting the 2014 NATO Summit, during which global leaders will gather to discuss ways to continue shaping comprehensive security solutions and strengthening international cooperation. Culture and Media : The performing arts and culture have long been strengths of Wales, and currently a number of well-known professionals hailing from the nation hold notable roles in theatre, television and film in the U.S. This list includes Oscar winners Sir Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christian Bale and prominent composer Karl Jenkins, among hundreds of others. What more appropriate time to talk about the countrys storied poet Dylan Thomas. The centenary of Dylan Thomass birth (born Swansea: October 27, 1914; died New York City: November 9, 1953) will be celebrated by a yearlong countrywide cultural festival- Dylan Thomas 100 - in Wales in 2014. A new interactive map-based and eponymously named digital hub www.dylanthomas100.org makes it easy and fun to discover Dylan Thomas, explore places in Wales he is connected with, engage via social networking and locate festival events via a Timeline tab. The Dylan Thomas 100 Festivals Royal Patron, HRH Prince Charless new reading of Fern Hill is now available online at http://www.dylanthomas100.org/english/multimedia/prince-charles-reads-fern-hill/ . Fern Hill' is one of Thomas's best known poems. The Prince of Wales said: "For National Poetry Day, I was very
glad, if somewhat hesitant!to be able to record a reading of one of my personal favorites, 'Fern Hill', with its poignant and moving evocation of a rural west Wales childhood. I cannot help feeling this is one of the great legacies of Thomas's poetry that it inspires people to appreciate the incomparable landscape of Wales." Honorary Patron and Dylans granddaughter, Hannah Ellis has joined the Welsh Government in endorsing Dylan Thomas 100 and its digital hub. Dylan Thomas 100 and www.dylanthomas100.org will of course highlight Welsh locations closely associated with the poet-like his birthplace, Swansea, his old writing shed, and his home -The Boathouse - in the town of Laugharne. And New Quay-template for the Under Milk Wood village, Llareggub (bugger all spelled backwards!). However, the festival encompasses the entire country and beyond. And the program ranges across all artistic disciplines from literature, to opera, theatre and painting. From high profile exhibits and live performances to community-based educational programs. This celebration will transcend geographic boundaries, stretching beyond Wales to New York. In one of its most inventive and ambitious projects, National Theatre Wales, in cooperation with BBC Wales, will stage a multimedia global event. In a combination of live broadcast, film and performance, a distinguished Welsh cast will engage with contemporary Welsh poet Owen Sheers 60-minute version of Under Milk Wood in a transatlantic live-linked event, with characters and voices in various locations from Laugharne to New York. For the live theater audiences, this may be an intimate audience of six in a dressing room with actor Eve Myles (TORCHWOOD) or hundreds on a street in Laugharne with Artistic Director / Actor Michael Sheen (FROST / NIXON; THE QUEEN). Business and Tourism Minister Edwina Hart said: Dylan Thomas is one of the literary giants of the last century. These events will help contribute to a fitting legacy for Dylans life and work, but I also hope they will resurrect a passion for literature and inspire people of all ages to connect more actively with our rich cultural heritage. In the spirit of Dylan, it is an opportunity to showcase Wales as a land of artistic excellence to an international audience and raise further the iconic status of this great literary figure.

Welsh Diva Iris Williams Returns to New York Citys Cabaret Scene Completes Her Romantic Musical Journey In Performance at Metropolitan Room on October 6 and 20 New York, NY August 20, 2013 International song stylist Iris Williams returns to the New York cabaret scene in two appearances at the popular new Flatiron jazz venue, The Metropolitan Room. The intimate 115-seat space is one of the few remaining cabaret rooms in America. Ms. Williams will transport you on A Romantic Musical Journey as she interprets standards by the likes of Rogers and Hart, Duke Ellington and Jerome Kern on October 6 and October 20 at 9:30 pm. Iris Williams :: Metropolitan Room Manhattan, NYC, music, jazz, jazz . To quote The New York Times Stephen Holden, This demure Welsh singer has one of the most striking voices in all of cabaret... The vivacious and elegant chanteuse, who always performs with a mischievous twinkle in her eye - Iris Williams - I'm Gonna Live 'Til I Die - YouTube says, Im over the moon excited at coming back to the New York cabaret circuit. The Metropolitan Rooms coziness suits me down to the ground. Itll let me keep the audience where I like them up close in a hug or cwtch as we say in Welsh. Ms. Williams, a favorite of Presidents and Royalty, was born in Pontypridd, Wales. Her exceptional talent and rich, warm contralto have impelled her far beyond the borders of her beloved Wales. A scholarship student at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, she eventually decided to transition away from opera. Her instincts were rewarded and her classical training helped Iris to thrive when her honest and touching rendition of He Was Beautiful went gold and propelled the already-accomplished singing actress along a different path, launching her international career. You might say shes been on a musical journey all her own. Now based in New York, the much-loved songstress still performs frequently in Wales. Awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II for her musical accomplishments and her work with charity, Iris Williams has performed with Bob Hope and Rosemary Clooney, for President Gerald Ford, the British Royal Family and at The Algonquins iconic Oak Room. Its hard to imagine that vital, carousing, temperamental soul in mellow old age. Harder still to imagine the world-acclaimed actor as a family man worrying about his daughters wounded heart, as a thoughtful and voracious reader of all manner of subjects, and as an insecure man with self-esteem issues, who, nonetheless, could paint vividly mocking pictures of several hallowed contemporary thespians whose work he found wanting. But The Richard Burton Dairies, soon-to-be published by the Yale University Press ( www.yalebooks.com ), reveal that and much more about the man behind the legend. Liz Smith calls them Fun, fascinating and sad. Publishers Weekly named the book an Indie Sleeper. Welsh historian Chris Williams, took on the 2-year editing project alongside his responsibilities as a professor of Welsh history at Swansea University in South Wales. Williams says, many readers will be surprised how interested he was in books and in scholarship. current and world affairs which extended to the question of the environment. he had an enormous appetite for learning a restlessness almost. Burton was known later in life for being an Oscar-nominated actor, as notorious for his marriages to the dazzling Elizabeth Taylor as for his acting talent, rugged good looks and mellifluous speaking voice. These diaries echo with details of their tempestuous, torturous and yet tender relationship. He hobnobbed with artists, politicos and the Hollywood elite, but Burtons beginnings were far humbler. He was a miners son, born Richard Jenkins, in the tiny village of Pontrhydyfen in Wales on November 10, 1925. This twelve-pound bouncing baby boy was born in the same modest home as his father and shared it with his eleven siblings and their parents for the first 2 years of his life. His keen mind and acting potential were recognized by his teacher Phillip Burton who became young Richards mentor, friend, surrogate father and, ultimately, his guardian. The legal guardianship took effect in December 1943 and so Richard Burton was born. Complementing the Yale University Press publication of The Richard Burton Diaries is the airing, on November 25, of the Lifetime TV movie, Liz and Dick, starring Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler, scripted by Welsh director Chris Monger. In addition, Burton has been honored by a Wales-based initiative: the 3-mile Richard Burton Trail surrounded by the serene Welsh beauty of the Afan Forest Park, highlights the area in which he was born; a second trail is due to open in nearby Port Talbot, where he was raised, in November 2012. The official website, www.visitnpt.co.uk/richardburton features interviews with his friends and family who share their memories of Burton, as well as a downloadable Trail map and guide. In addition to Burton, actors Anthony Hopkins, Michael Sheen and Richard Griffiths all have roots in this tiny place of about 46,000. Neath Port Talbot has been chosen as the location for the new TV series, Da Vincis Demons, beating out Canada, New Zealand and Ireland to host the project. Its iconic Margam Castle will be transformed into the Medici Palace. Script writer David S. Goyer (of The Dark Knight Rises and Blade fame) says that America does not have castles period. Swansea Bay has them everywhere. In fact Wales has 641 more castles per capita than any other country. 2) Swansea University www.swansea.ac.uk Boasts the Richard Burton Centre for the Study of Wales, an interdisciplinary research forum. It is part of the Research Institute for the Arts and Humanities, which also features work on the Swansea poet, Dylan Thomas; Houses Richard Burtons personal papers (which were given to Swansea U. by his widow, Sally) in the Richard Burton Archive, which was opened in April 2010; Has just secured 60 million funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) towards an expansion program for its Welsh campus. The development will include the construction of a new Science and Innovation Campus and the regeneration of the Universitys Singleton Park Campus. The development is expected to act as a catalyst for what is expected to be the largest knowledge economy project in the UK and one of the top five in Europe. 3) Richard Burton Theatre - www.rwcmd.ac.uk/other/news/headlines/greatest_welsh_actor.aspx Located at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Waless capital city, Cardiff, is a most fitting memorial to one of Waless most famous acting sons. The 160-seat theatre opened with a tribute to Burton in June 2011.

Media Contact : Bob Titley The Robert Titley Consultancy roberttitley@aol.com (917) 690 8418 Richard Burton Bared: Richard Burton Trails in Wales, Yales Richard Burton Diaries, Liz & DickLifetime/Lohan FlickAll Coming Soon New York, NY October 3, 2012 Surrounded by the serene Welsh beauty of the Afan Forest Park, iconic Welsh actor, Richard Burton, has been honored with the 3-mile Richard Burton Trail that highlights the area in which this son of a Welsh miner was born; a second trail is due to open in nearby Port Talbot, where he was raised, in November 2012. The official website, www.visitnpt.co.uk/richardburton features interviews with his friends and family who share their memories of Burton, as well as a downloadable Trail map and guide. Complementing this Wales-based initiative, are the imminent publication by the Yale University Press of The Richard Burton Diaries (edited by Welsh historian Chris Williams) and the airing on November 25 of Lifetime TVs movie Liz and Dick, starring Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler, scripted by Welsh director Chris Monger. When Burton (ne Jenkins) was born in the tiny village of Pontyrhydyfen near Port Talbot in Wales on November 10, 1925 no one could have imagined that this twelve-pound bouncing baby boy would go on to become an Oscar-winning actor, as well known for his marriages to the dazzling Elizabeth Taylor as for his acting talent, rugged good looks and mellifluous speaking voice. The Richard Burton Trail was the brainchild of locals who wanted to celebrate their most famous son. His younger brother, Graham Jenkins, who still lives in the area, was personally involved. The story of Burtons remarkable life is told in words and pictures on the way markers that can be found all along the route. Early on, you pass Penhydd Street , home to many of Burtons family members. Then walk across the impressive Pontrhydyfen Aqueduct , high above the Afan River: The structure was built in 1825 by local iron works owner, John Reynolds. Burtons modest birthplace , which backs onto the river, housed Burton, his eleven siblings and their parents. Relish his honeyed tones as he recites passages from Under Milk Wood, and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night both written by his favorite poet, Welshman Dylan Thomas. The interpretative trail zigzags along to the nine-arched Pontyrhydyfen Viaduct . Built in 1898, the splendid railway bridge carried coal from the Tonmawr collieries to Port Talbot docks to be exported worldwide. When you reach the life-sized sculpture of Burton at the picnic area, you can enjoy both a respite and the spectacular view. Then you double back to Bethel Chapel , where, in 1984, many celebrities rubbed shoulders with hundreds of everyday folk at Burtons memorial service. A second Richard Burton walking trail is being developed in Taibach in Port Talbot, where Richard spent his childhood and teenage years. Points of interest will include his home, where he worked as a young boy, where he spent his free time and the school where his keen mind and acting potential were recognized by his teacher, friend, surrogate father and ultimately his guardian, Phillip Burton.
